The World According to August One Good Friend eBook Sandra Westendorf Tracy Rand Reviews
This was a cute book. I was able to read and review this book for free. It was very sweet and inspiring. August has autism, and he is able to deal with it with the help of his friends and family. August is like my friend's brother. He also has autism, yet he has a harder time dealing with it. This book would make anyone happy and make any day better, no matter how bad.
This book brings differences into the mainstream and shows that we all have the same hopes and needs whatever our particular challenges. I'm happy to see a book that will be understood and appreciated by all kids and I do hope that all the schools will pick this up and add it to the books that are available for young readers to bring home - it will enlighten parents as well as kids.
This is a sweet and simple story about an autistic kid who is nervous about standing up in front of a class. It highlights how important friendship is for everyone, even kids who might seem different on the outside.
If you are looking for a story that expresses the communality between all children, and that highlights autism, then this is a good choice. (If you are looking for a book that educates kids on what autism is, or how autistic children act, then pass this one up.) That being said, there are several issues with the book
--It has a lot of the problems typical of a self-published work some spelling and grammatical errors, a bit too much passive voice and "telling" instead of "showing", and a lot of changes in verb tense (from past to present tense and back, sometimes within the same paragraph).
-- The book is very generously illustrated, but sometimes the connection between the illustrations and the story is only tenuous, and often the illustrations are shown before the pertinent events in the story, leaving the reader to guess at their meaning.
-- There is a lot of front matter that would have been better placed in the back. The story doesn't even start until 40% through the book.
If you are the intended audience for this book, then those issues will probably not matter or diminish your enjoyment of this book. As of this writing, there are not many kids ebooks with autistic characters, so I applaud the author and illustrator for this efforts. Nonetheless, as a reviewer, I feel I would be remiss if I did not mention the flaws. (I received a complimentary copy of this book in order to review it.)
I was delighted to see The World According to August One Good Friend.
As the parent of a child with autism, I am grateful to the author for creating this wonderful book. It is lovely and touching and fun.
The main character, August, has Asperger's Syndrome, and he wants to make friends, just like any other kid. The author makes this point beautifully and gently, without being tiresome or preachy.
This book would be an excellent gift for anyone on the autism spectrum, or for a child who has a classmate or sibling with special needs of any kind.
Illustrations can make or break a children's book. In this case, the illustrations enhanced a wonderful story that was well-told. They were bright and fun and my children loved them.
I liked this book so well, I asked the author if I could interview her! You can check out the author's comments and answers to my questions here [...]
